Native Summer Village

This handsome facility is situated in a beautiful cove north of Juneau once used by Tlinkit people as a summer village.

Mendenhall Glacier

This modern high-volume facility may be the only busy outhouse in Alaska, and this is the overflow from the regular bathrooms. Be sure to visit Mendenhall in the morning before the Cruisers arrive.

Matanuska Glacier

Don't miss this lovely spot just above the Matanuska Glacier. Look out for moose.

Worthington Glacier

Another worthy addition from the base of Worthington Glacier on the road out of Valdez.

Blueberry Lake

This handsome structure is next to Blueberry Lake near Thompson Pass on the Richardson Highway.

Tunnel stop

These standard fair outhouses are near the Portage Glacier near the entry to the two-mile one-lane tunnel through the mountain to Whittier. Last stop.

Exit Here

This handsome structure is at the entry to Exit Glacier just north of Seward. You can gather nearby for a great hike lead by the Rangers close to the glacier.

Turnagain?

This dreary guy was off the Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet about a half hour south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway. You can observe the largest tidal changes in the US in the shallow mud flats over the hill.

Ventura classic

Here is a classic model from the Dudley House in Ventura.

Montgomery fortress

This solid structure from Mongomery State Park in Northern California looks wooden but is actually totally made from concrete. It may be sturdy, but it was also pretty smelly.

Somewhere in this park there is a tree 369 feet tall, but they won't tell you where.

Here is an entry from Ben and Nancy that is between Silverton and Ouray on the Molas Pass.

Olympic Peninsula and Orcas Island

These two beauties were submitted by the T's from their recent trip to the Olympic Peninsula and Orcas Island. Knowing this family, access to both of these facilities involves a good amount of hiking. I believe the first is near Madison Falls and the second is close to a campsite.

Goat Whisker Trail

This handsome potty is our second Catalina entry submitted by Kaylee, Lily, Lacey, Mark, and Laika. It is at the top of a difficult climb north of Two Harbors. They had to avoid two rattlesnakes on the goat trail to capture this shot.

Hendy Woods

This modest latrine is in the meadow at the entrance to the Big Hendy Grove. In the background you can see the tops of a few of the big trees. You can walk for miles in the shade of the 100 foot tall forest.

100 Pigs

Your outhouse photos took me back to when I was 15. I spent a summer on a pig farm in Pueblo Colorado. A friend and I lived with a bachelor in a 2 room shack with no running water or a bathroom. We worked on the farm and for other farmers. Needless to say we pooped and peed in a 3 sided outhouse with a Sears catalog. The view out the front looked out over cornfields and over 100 pigs. It was the best summer I ever had. Story by Bob P.

Mt Howard

Above is the first solicited picture from John H. from Oregon. This handsome structure is at over 8,000 feet above Joseph Oregon. John also sent a link to Five North Cascades Privies where the views don’t stink! » Craig Romano

Catalina Divide

This project started with a conversation with my son-in-law Mark on our walk across the divide above Avalon. We laughed about the idea of printing a coffee table book with associated stories. We thought about soliciting entries and offering a share of the royalties if they made the cut. The selection process could be based on various categories including scenic views, uniqueness, technology, and cleanliness with 1-5 stars. Not so sure about the money-making aspect, but this blog is a start and collecting material.

Glacier Highway

There were many very nice remote toilets along the Glacier Highway in Alberta. Each spotless with bear proof regular and recycle trash cans at regular turnouts. The US can learn a lot from the Canadians when it comes to reducing waste and protecting the environment.
